I used to think that there was something wrong with ME when one of my white friends would tell a stupid racist joke that I found hurtful and offensive (or call me a g**k or whatever). After all, they are able to laugh at themselves so why couldn’t I?
I later realized that they are laughing at themselves as a way to cope with their own flaws and shortcomings. My ethnicity is not a flaw or a shortcoming.
Their racist jokes bring me back to a place where some random person walks up to me with a confused a puzzled expression and asks me "What are you?” like I’m some kind of thing.
Their racist jokes make me feel like they don’t see me as a friend but rather as “that Asian girl they allow to hang out with them”.
I am at a point in my life where I refuse to compromise my humanity for a cheap laugh.
